This Thursday evening, we continue our study of the book of Ecclesiastes. We picked up in the middle of chapter 3 tonight.
I remember years ago hearing an invitation to faith that went something like this. Jesus is changing the world. Do you want to be a world changer too? Then join up with Jesus and you can change the world with him. It was tragic that this preacher did not call the many non-believers present to examine their lives in light of the law and then preach to them the good news that Jesus died to save sinners. Joining Jesus to heroically change the world is not the Gospel and it cannot save. But even for those already in Christ, world-changing is not really what we are about. It is right and good to want to make the world a better place and in so far as you and I do as Jesus commands, that happens. Sometimes that happens in major ways. But the idea that if we really buckle down and work at it, we can fundamentally change the world is, as Solomon will point out this evening, vanity, chasing after the wind.
