Dear Good Shepherd,

Andrea is taking a break from the Update this week, so you’ll notice its a bit shorter and a lot less articulate. I don’t have time to write up a reflection today but I did want to remind you that this coming Sunday is Pentecost…the day we celebrate the birth of the Church, the descent and indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Because it’s such an important event we’re taking a break from our series in Mark and we’ll work through Acts 2:1-4 during the sermon time. And adult Christian ed (9:15am) will mark the beginning of a new series on the Person and Work of the Spirit. You can see the description of the class below. Happy Pentecost!

Benefit Concert Sunday May 19th!
High Street United Methodist Church will be hosting a concert to benefit CHOW and Loaves and Fishes this afternoon at 4:00pm. Churches from across the Southside will be participating. Consider attending to enjoy a variety of music. If you would also like to support these local food pantries, a gift offering will be collected.

Commissioning Stephanie Warner: Stephanie Warner has stepped forward and agreed to serve as the new Shepherd’s Bowl coordinator. We’re extremely thankful for her willingness to serve and we’ll pray for God’s blessing on her new ministry this coming Sunday.

Summer Bible Adventure
Camp is coming! Your elementary school aged children are invited to come learn that God builds, guides, provides, rescues, and keeps his promises. The adventure takes place during the second week of August from 6:00-8:30. Friends are always fun to bring to camp.

Prayer Shawl Ministry: (from Pat Chaney) Prayer Shawls have been made for centuries. They are symbolic of the reconciling and comforting love of God offered to all through faith in Jesus Christ. This prayerful ministry is open to beginning or master knitter (or crocheter). We meet at 11:15 the third Saturday of the month…May 18, June 15….Come and Join Us!!!

“And as for your little ones…”
After the 10:30 worship service this week, you can hear all about some exciting plans for the children. God has blessed Good Shepherd incredibly! Please plan to stay for a short while, ask questions you may have, and celebrate the goodness God has poured out on this congregation.

Informational Meeting:
As we discussed at this year’s annual meeting, one of the big projects this year will be the construction of new classrooms. Right now we’re stretched for space (a good problem) and if we want to continue growing we’ll need to remedy that. On May 19th after the 10:30am service there will be a short informational meeting in the sanctuary during which members of the vestry and education department will lay out the plans for the new classrooms and answer any questions you might have. We’re very excited about this project and hope you will come to hear about the plans.

Food Pantry Needs
I apologize to all those who use the pantry as it has been almost empty for quite some time. For those who can afford it, please consider purchasing a few extra groceries this week for the pantry and pray that God would help to move others to donate as well. Thank you and God bless – CJ Johnson
Weekly Prayer for Missionaries
Please pray for Katy McFadden as she begins her last month of service in Honduras and prepares for her return to the US on June 2nd.

Christian Ed
I’m still trying to prepare for the next Church history series which will trace the history of the Eastern Orthodox church. I’ve got a lot of reading to do before I’m ready to teach on that topic. So I thought we’d fit in two distinct series this summer. The first, beginning this Sunday, will be titled: The Work and Person of the Holy Spirit. Who is the Holy Spirit and what does he do? Do the gifts of speaking in tongues, healing, prophecy, etc identified in 1 Cor 12 still exist and if so, how are they manifested in the church? Is there such thing as a “second blessing”? We’ll talk about the relationship between the Spirit and the Bible, the Spirit and Prayer, and the Spirit and the Church.

The second series which I hope to begin late-summer will be a return to something we’ve not covered in many years: Understanding singleness, marriage and children from a biblical perspective.

Last Sunday’s Sermon by the Rev. Matt Kennedy, “Making the Narrow Road Narrower” can be listened to or downloaded here. There is, unfortunately, no video this week.

This Week’s Sermon will be based on Acts 2:1-4 - the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

Dear Good Shepherd,

10 Now there was a famine in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land. 11 When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “I know that you are a woman beautiful in appearance, 12 and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me, but they will let you live. 13 Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake.” 14 When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful. 15 And when the princes of Pharaoh saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house. 16 And for her sake he dealt well with Abram; and he had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

17 But the LORD afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18 So Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for my wife? Now then, here is your wife; take her, and go.” 20 And Pharaoh gave men orders concerning him, and they sent him away with his wife and all that he had.

One thing that makes the old testament so great to read, is it is very easy to relate to if you can deal with the historical context. The patriarchs are talked about as real people with flaws of their own, yet God works good out of so many bad situations, both sin and difficult circumstances. Abram has to deal with a famine, and move his family to a strange land, away from the land that God had previously promised him. Sarai was handed over to Pharaoh as his wife while she was already married to Abram. I’m sure that was a bit hard on their marriage…yet God blesses Abram still as Pharaoh gave him livestock and servants, and increases his wealth. How good it is to see God’s blessings amidst life’s ups and downs.

In Christ,
Christian Ed
Throughout the week I’ve received a number of emails with some great questions, many of them from BU students who will be gone for the summer next week, so I’ve decided to extend last week’s Q and A for another week. If you have questions about anything please email me beforehand (lambeth98@gmail.com) or bring them to the class. Among the questions we’ll discuss on Sunday are these:

1. Was the American Revolution a violation of the command to submit to authority found in Romans 13?
2. Is all pride bad? Is there any sense in which you can be pleased with what you have done without sinning?
3. More questions about pursuing a spouse and how to know when it is right to commit to marriage.
4. Here’s a question I’ll just quote since it involves some sub-questions too: “I was wondering what the biblical basis is for admonishing brothers and sisters/speaking truth into their lives, etc. Since I’ve become a Christian, I’ve heard tons of different views on this: If someone you know is sinning in a certain area of their lives or just struggling in general, what role do we play in that? Some have said just pray for them because conviction is something that God is going to do in their heart. Other’s say that you should confront them. And some just say somewhere in the middle. I know there is a lot in the Bible about it, so what does the balance look like?”
5. What does the bible say about slavery?
6. Can we and if so, how do we pray for things that we want but we’re not sure whether God wants?

And that’s just a sample. Hope to see you Sunday.

Last Sunday’s Sermon by the Rev. Matt Kennedy, “Being Last of All” can be listened to or downloaded here. There is, unfortunately, no video this week.

This Week’s Sermon will be based on Mark 9:38-41.

“38 John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name,[a] and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” 39 But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40 For the one who is not against us is for us. 41 For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward.”

Discussion Questions:
Text: Mark 9:30-36, Romans 1:24, 26, 28

1. [App] Why is it important to know that the crucifixion is the only way God had designed for salvation and not a “plan B” or back-up plan? What does this ultimately say about God?

2. [Romans 1] What is being revealed about God by him letting u do what we want – particularly Him allowing us to be given over to our sinful heart and depraved mind?

3. [v.31] Why is it important that Jesus gives himself up, as opposed to be given over by the hands of man (such as Judas or the Sanhedrin)?

4. [v.32] Why would the disciples be afraid to ask Jesus questions about what he teaches them? What prevents the disciples from asking?

5. [v.33-34] Have you ever daydreamed about something you really wanted or wanted to happen? How does this dream work its way to your thoughts and actions in reality?

6. [v.33-34] Why do we want to be first? Where did this desire come from and when did we cultivate it?

7. [v.35] What does it mean to be a “servant of all” or “being the very last” in today’s time and culture?

Dear Good Shepherd,

So I was reading Ephesians chapters two and three and I began to try to sort out the words in it that have become so commonplace in churches that they are used without a thought to their deeper meaning. So in lieu of writing the entire passage down, I thought I would share my train of thought here. It begins with grace. Grace is a free gift from God that we do not deserve or could not acquire on our own. “For by grace we are given faith,” Faith is what makes is possible to be close to Jesus, “that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.” And to be close to him is to grow to understand who he is; his love. “To know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” And here, it seems to me you can make a circle back to God’s love for us, because it is out of his love that he shows us grace in the first place…

Summer Bible Adventure
Each summer, the Southside Ecumenical Council supports our churches in running a gospel-centered one week program for elementary-aged children. Many of you know this type of program as Vacation Bible School. It is our turn to host this year! We had a great time and successful week last time Good Shepherd hosted. Please consider helping during the week of August 12-16. A wide variety of skills are needed that week. Please talk with Anna or let her know that you are curious about what’s happening. annadreher@stny.rr.com or 238-7898

“And as for your little ones…”
Have you seen those new bulletins for the kids? The children’s bulletin, designed for students too old for Children’s Chapel, is intended to be used in conjunction with the regular bulletin. It guides the students as we progress through worship, teaches them how to begin taking notes as they listen carefully to the sermon, and helps them see how well they are able to engage throughout our worship. There is no age limit. Ask for a copy one Sunday and see what you think!

Blood Pressure Screening
Every Sunday there will be blood pressure screening in the Parish Hall between the 8AM and the 10:30AM service. Dolly Shaller/Mary Foote will be available downstairs in the bookshelf corner. Please take the time to monitor this important measure of health.

Food Pantry Needs
We are running extremely low on items for the food pantry. Please consider helping out those who use the donations to get by. Anything you would care to donate would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your continued generosity! In Christ’s love - CJ Johnson
We’ll start to wind up our discussion of the Doctrine of Revelation this Sunday with a discussion of the art and science of biblical interpretation. How do you understand the meaning of the bible? Is one interpretation just as good as another? We’ll look at some of the key principles and tools.

Last Sunday’s Sermon by the Rev. Matt Kennedy, “Coming Down the Mountain” can be listened to or downloaded here.
This Week’s Sermon will be based on Mark 9:14-29.

“14 And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. 15 And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him. 16 And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” 17 And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. 18 And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” 19 And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” 20 And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. 21 And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23 And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out[d] and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” 25 And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26 And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28 And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” 29 And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”

Discussion Questions:
Text:Text: Mark 9:9-13

1. [v. 9,10] Have you ever had a situation where you couldn’t tell someone exciting news? Is it hard to do so? Why or why not?
2. [v.9,10] When a command is given that is lacking reason or explanation, does it make it harder to follow it? (For example, think about “Respect and honor those in authority.”) Also, how can we justify following such a command?
3. [App] How is obedience and trust related? Why is it that they both grow together, or fall apart together?
4. [App] What makes the idea of Revelation/End Times so interesting to us? And why are there so many different viewpoints?
5. [App] Why is one man (Jesus) rising from the dead very much different then everyone rising from the dead with Jesus? Why must it happen this way, and no way else?
6. [v.11-13] Why is knowing all of Scripture necessary to put together a full understanding of any doctrine - especially complex ones such as Creation, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection, and Revelation?
7. [App] The Gospel requires a recognition of sin and humility of self, and the act of Jesus (and ultimately us) carrying the cross amplifies the Gospel message even more. How is this so?

Its been a horrible week. First the Boston Marathon bombings, then the ricin mailings, on Wednesday the fertilizer plant explosion in Texas, and just this morning a running battle between terrorists and police on the streets of Watertown.

Following the news of the Boston Marathon bombing on Twitter, I read one celebrity (I think it was Justin Beiber, but can’t remember) tweet, “I think I’ve just lost faith in humanity.”

I hope that is not true for you.

Christians really shouldn’t ever lose faith in humanity since we don’t put our faith in humanity. The world is a mad, chaotic place and it has been ever since human beings turned away from the God who made all things and who, in Jesus of Nazareth, came to restore all things. As John puts it:

“This is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.”(John 3:19)

People love darkness. The one who makes that judgment is Jesus himself. It explains a lot about our world and our history and the events of this week. We should not be surprised when people do awful things. Nor should we be surprised when awful things happen.

In Luke 15, Jesus tells a parable about a young son who asked his father if he might receive his inheritance early, before his father had actually died. In that culture to ask for such a thing was a grave insult but the father nevertheless agreed.

The son took the money and travelled far away. In no time he’d spent his entire inheritance on wild living. Soon he was destitute, reduced to feeding pigs for hire. He was so impoverished and so hungry, Jesus said, that he craved the food he was feeding the pigs.

His hunger, his poverty, the turmoil of his life - all consequences of his decision to leave his father’s house.

In the same way the world, turning from the God who created us, has also been reduced to a sad and sorry state. The world loves the darkness and God has handed the world over to it’s loves. He’s given us our inheritance and let us go off into a far country.

Disaster, death, terror, and sorrow are the consequences.

The larger question, and one that is asked frequently, is why God hasn’t put a stop to it?

There are a number of good biblical answers to that question but here’s the briefest: God is patient and merciful with his human creatures. If today God were to eradicate darkness from the world it would mean everlasting torment for those who love and embrace it. Were he to remove the cause of death, pain, sorrow, despair and tragedy from the face of the earth, it would mean removing sinners from the face of the earth.

God is a just and holy God so he will not hold back his hand forever. There will be a time when will act and evil will be banished along with those who love it.

But God loves sinners.

And now is the time of mercy and salvation. God is waiting patiently, holding back his hand, in order to gather all who will turn from the darkness and come into the light. So for a little while the darkness endures. But only a little while.

God became human in the man Jesus Christ. He lived a sinless life. He died in the place of sinners. He rose on the Third day. He ascended into heaven. By enduring the punishment for our sins, by living a righteous life on our behalf, God made it possible for the prodigal sons to come home. And as John writes:

“...to all who receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”(John 1:12-13)

For those of us who have been brought into the household of God, the darkness in our hearts that we used to love is being overwhelmed by the light of Christ who lives in us. The present darkness in the world continues but it too, one day, will be completely overthrown. John describes that day in Revelation 21:1-5 and I’ll close with his words:

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.”

Dear Good Shepherd,

It has been such a relief to see flowers, and green leaves and grass finally! The first little crocuses are poking their blossoms up, so exciting to see something besides gray. As I read this passage, it struck me how passive we are as God does all the work, or making us holy, and pouring out blessings, and working good through us. This is such a good thing because if we did not have the power of God on our side, nothing would get done. As we become lazy, weak, and mired down in the busyness of life, I say, thanks be to God it is not only by our own work that the kingdom of God grows!

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
-Ephesians 2:8-10

“Where is God?”: If you’re not asking that question in light of the terrible events of this week, some of your friends and family members may be. I’ve written a brief article to address the question.

Movie Night:On Friday April 19th at 7PM, there will be another showing of the movie “Soul Surfer” in the Parish Hall. Light refreshments will be served. Please invite family and friends. All are welcome!

Blood Pressure Screening: Every Sunday there will be blood pressure screening in the Parish Hall between the 8AM and the 10:30AM service. Dolly Shaller/Mary Foote will be available downstairs in the bookshelf corner. Please take the time to monitor this important measure of health.

Food Pantry Needs: We are running extremely low on items for the food pantry. Please consider helping out those who use the donations to get by. Anything you would care to donate would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your continued generosity! In Christ’s love - CJ Johnson

Weekly Prayer for Missionaries: Please pray for Carrie Moorhead and all InterVarsity leaders, especially those in the Boston area. May the Holy Spirit give them wisdom as they meet and counsel students attempting to understand this world in which we live

Christian Ed: We’ll start to wind up our discussion of the Doctrine of Revelation this Sunday with a discussion of the art and science of biblical interpretation. How do you understand the meaning of the bible? Is one interpretation just as good as another? We’ll look at some of the key principles and tools.

Last Sunday’s Sermon by the Rev. Matt Kennedy, “The Transfiguration of Jesus” can be listened to or downloaded here. There is, unfortunately, no video this week.

This Week’s Sermon will be based on Mark 9:9-13.

And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. 11 And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” 12 And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”

Discussion Questions:
Text: Mark 9:1-7, 2 Corinthians 4:16-18, Genesis 22:3-14

1. [App] Why might people not be concerned about life after death, or Heaven and Hell? What makes us so attached to the here and now?

2. [2 Cor 4:16-18] Why should Christian’s thoughts of eternity be met with excitement and anticipation?

3. [Mark 9:1] How do we see the power of God at work today? Alternatively, when was the last time you’ve seen the power of God?

4. [App] How does the Transfiguration account continue what happens between Abraham and Isaac in Genesis 22:3-14?

5. [Mark 9:4] Why is it important that Moses and Elijah appear to discuss Jesus’ “departure?”

6. [Mark 9:5] What is implied by Peter’s offer to make tents for Jesus, Moses and Elijah?

7. [App] Why is it important that Jesus has to physically change (in both clothing and appearance)?

Discussion Questions:
Text: John 20:24-29, Hebrews 11:1

1. [v.1] If we allow our faith to exist as a feeling alone, what are the spiritual consequences of that? What important parts of the Christian life become lost?
2. [v.1] Why should the Christian faith need to provide evidence to verify its truthfulness?
3. [v.1] If a belief fails to produce evidence, what does that mean? How should we approach those who strongly believe something, but can’t provide evidence supporting that claim?
4. [v.24-25] Put yourself in Thomas’ shoes. Why is it so difficult for him to believe in Jesus resurrection, despite hearing testimony from so many others? How would you deal with the situation if you were Thomas?
5. [v.26-28] Jesus, who greatly loves Thomas, comes to him despite his unbelief. What implications does this have for those we try to share the Gospel with?
6. [App] What lesson(s) can you learn from Thomas, considering where you are right now in your walk with Jesus? Alternatively, what has God revealed to you during his Lenten and Easter season?

Discussion Questions:
Text: Luke 23:50 - 24:12

1. [App] What comes to mind when you think of the resurrection? Also, what are a few of the misconceptions people have when talking about the Resurrection?
2. [v.6] Why did it seem that Jesus’ followers didn’t remember and/or believe His claims that He would rise on the third day? Can you blame them for such an oversight?
3. [App] What other salvific promises are also difficult to believe and live out?
4. [v.5] The women are looking for life in dying places and this is very accurate of the human condition. How do we seek life among the dead and dying?
5. [v.9-12] Why were the apostles so quick to dismiss the women’s story, even though there were many of them? What does it say about their faith, when they have to see the tomb itself?
6. [App] Why is it important that we follow a God that we don’t completely understand? How is that better than following a god that we understand fully?
7. [App] Why is the Resurrection of Jesus a hope and a promise for us?

Dear Good Shepherd,

Happy Easter! The Lord is risen! This is such an exciting time of year to be reminded of glory and power of Jesus our King who reigns over a kingdom of life and joy! It is hard sometimes to wait for the return of Christ when sin and death will not even be a thought and the peace between God and his creation can be fully realized. But thanks be to God for his abiding patience for those who still toil under the slavery of sin. In this last stage of God’s plan for redemption it is important to realize how close we are and continue to spread the good news in earnest. I encourage you to use this day to talk about Christ to those who may be celebrating Easter with only bunnies and eggs having no knowledge of what this day truly means for mankind.

7 The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. – 1 Peter 4:7-11

In Christ,
Andrea

Schedule Changes Next Week:Matt and Anne have next week off to recuperate after Holy Week and Easter. There will be no office hours and please do not attempt to reach them except for an emergency. They need a break

Also, there will be no men’s bible study but Commander Clay Davis will be leading Tuesday morning bible study this week. Please check with your mission group or bible study leaders to find out whether you are meeting this week.

Potluck Next Week: Be sure to stay after church and fellowship with friends over our monthly potluck lunch! Please consider sharing a favorite recipe with us, but if you can’t please stay and enjoy anyways.

Thank you Chris Vail: As many of you already know, Chris Vail decided to move on and hand in his resignation two weeks ago as church sexton. He is an exceptional worker who has poured himself out to keep the church clean and it’s grounds beautiful and I am sure I speak for everyone when I say that I am incredibly thankful for his sacrificial service.

Chris indicated that he does not want special attention and asked that we not make a big deal about him or have a party or any kind of special celebration of his work so we will honor that, but please do thank him and let him know how much you appreciate what he has done. And pray that God will bless him and guide him as he moves forward into new employment. Chris will, thankfully, still be around. He’ll continue as a member of Good Shepherd and he’ll continue to assist Tim and the choir leading worship.

Plans for the remainder of the year: There is now a very big hole to fill. Here’s the action plan the vestry discussed this week for grounds and cleaning. Last year the vestry hired a cleaning company at an extremely affordable rate to come in on Fridays and clean before Sunday services. The vestry will likely ask that they add another day of cleaning to their schedule and extend the scope of their services. The vestry will also contract with a landscaping company to keep the grounds in good condition during the spring and summer. Finally, the vestry plans to both ask for volunteers for special tasks and hold quarterly repair/maintenance days, asking for volunteers to help fix anything that has broken, paint anything that needs painting, etc.

In this way, the vestry believes that the high standard of cleanliness and order Chris set will be able to be maintained and that we will be able to do so while remaining within the boundaries set by our budget.

Reimbursement Checks: Whenever you are expecting a check for reimbursement of receipts or other reasons, please be sure to check the “Outgoing Checks” mailbox in front of my desk. I will no longer be leaving checks on my desk for people to pick up. Just be sure to look for the envelope with your name on it. In most cases I will contact you to try and let you know that it is ready for you. Thank you! – Andrea

Gender Matters Conference: There will be a conference that the Love and Truth Project is putting on in April 12 & 13 at UCCC. The subject matter of the conference is broader than homosexuality and will cover the importance of God given gender differences as well as various types of relational and sexual brokenness including heterosexual porn addiction, marital breakdown, female and male same sex attraction, and sex abuse in the church. Virginia Wetherbee will be doing two workshops, one on healthy marriage and one on running a support group for friends and family members of same sex attracted individuals. The Friday 5:30pm—9:30pm, and the Saturday 8:30am—9:30pm sessions cost $75, and Saturday only costs $55. Married couples and students save $20 on individual cost. Be sure to register ahead of time, see Virginia Wetherbee for more info.

This is really such a special time in the church calendar year to be a part of with our brothers and sisters in Christ. See the Week at a Glance or go online to the church website under “Weekly Updates” to see the dates, times, and additional info on the services offered.

This Week in Christian Ed: This Sunday we’ll continue our discussion of the Doctrine of Revelation. Last week we discussed how you might talk to non-Christian friends about the importance and inspiration of the bible. This week we’ll talk about the bible in your life, the life of the believer. First we’ll look at the evidences that God provides only to believers that authenticate the authority of the bible. Then we’ll talk about the doctrines of biblical authority and inerrancy and how they impact your daily life and walk of faith. Hope to see you there.

Discussion Questions:
Text: Mark 8:31-38, Luke 4:5-8, 13

1. [v.32-33] Considering how Peter treated Jesus, why is Jesus’ response back to Peter so harsh and heard among the other disciples? Is Jesus being disrespectful to Peter?

2. [v.33] Why does Jesus use the name “Satan” to describe Peter? Is Peter really possessed by Satan? Use the Luke 4 reference for more insight.

3. [App] When making an important or critical decision as a Christian, what steps do you usually take before making that decision? What temptations are we likely to face? What dangers should we be aware of?

4. [v.34] What does it mean to deny yourself? What does this look like in a person?

5. [v.34-35] Consider what the cross means to the disciples. Why is it a symbol of humiliation, torture, sacrifice, and ultimately death? (Remember, Jesus has not died on the cross yet at this point in time.)

6. [App] Why do we adopt the cross as our symbol today? Are its implications any different?

7. [v.36-38] What choices is Jesus offering the disciples, the crowd and, ultimately, us? What are the consequences of these choices?

Holy Week Schedule 2013: So here is the Holy Week Schedule as it stands now….we’ll update this page if there are any changes.

Palm Sunday (Sunday March 24th)
Holy Week is the week Christians remember and celebrate the last week of Jesus’ life. That week began with Jesus’ triumphal entry into the city of Jerusalem. By this time, Jesus was famous in Judea. Everyone knew him and many believed that he was the messiah, the coming savior of Israel. So when they heard he was coming they all rushed out waving palm branches and crying “Hosanna in the Highest! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Five days later the very same people who greeted Jesus with shouts of “Hosanna” screamed for his death with cries of “Crucify Him!” Palm Sunday Services at Good Shepherd will be held at 8:00am and 10:30am. They will begin with the blessing of the Palms. Then the Palms will be passed out to everyone in the congregation and we’ll process into the church like Jesus’ processed into Jerusalem (except for the donkey). During the service The Passion will be read and narrated.

Tenebrae (Wednesday March 27th 7:00pm)
Tenebrae means “shadows” in Latin. The worship service called “Tenebrae” is an ancient rite of the Church. It is a service of word, light and sound. When you arrive for worship you will see two groups of candles lit on the altar table. As readings are read the candles on the altar will be gradually extinguished until the very end of the service when the last candle left lit is removed from the worship space and the whole sanctuary is left in darkness. At that point a loud crash will (should) shatter the silence of the sanctuary. Then, after a moment, the last candle is returned to the sanctuary and the worshippers depart in silence. The gradual darkening of the sanctuary and the crashing noise symbolizes the apparent victory of death, darkness, and chaos over Jesus Christ on the cross. The final candle being removed and returned, symbolizes the truth that through Jesus’ death, God gained victory over all the powers of evil. The Light was not overcome. The service of Tenebrae will be held at 7:00pm on Wednesday(depending on the time of the sunset) of Holy Week.

Maundy Thursday (March 28th 7:00pm)
Maundy Thursday communion celebrates the humility of Jesus. Jesus is the King of Kings and Lord of Lord’s and yet on the night before he died, during the Last Supper, he knelt down and one by one washed his disciples’ feet. He did this to show his disciples and to show you and me how to serve one another with humility and love, being willing even to stoop to the most menial tasks. There will be a covered dish (pot-luck) supper in the parish hall followed by the Maundy Thursday worship service which will include foot washing. Maundy Thursday is the last chance for communion until the Great Vigil. The service will begin at 7:00pm following the covered dish dinner that begins at 5:30pm

Good Friday: The Passion (March 29th—prayer service at noon, stations at 7:00pm)
Jesus died on a Friday. At about 3pm on Friday of Holy Week he lifted his eyes up to heaven from the cross and breathed out his last. “It is finished” he said. He was not only referring to his life, but he was also referring to his mission to deal with and defeat once and for all sin, death, and Satan. On the cross of Jesus Christ, God defeated the powers that corrupt and destroy his creation and his creatures. By and through Jesus’ death on the cross, everyone who believes is forgiven their sins and granted an eternal relationship with God. Good Friday Services will be held at noon and at 7pm.

The Easter Vigil (Saturday March 30th 8:00pm)
Along with Tenebrae, the Easter Vigil is one of the most ancient services of the Church. It is the most important service of the entire year and it is the first service of Easter. The service begins in total darkness—the lights of the sanctuary are out and not a candle is burning. Then a fire is lit in a firepot the center of the nave and from that flame all the candles in the sanctuary are lit and the hand-candles in the congregation. Then come readings and psalms, said and sung, by singers and by the whole congregation. The sermon follows and then the first Communion of Easter. The Great Vigil begins at 8:00pm in the sanctuary.

Easter Day: (Sunday March 31st at the usual service times 8 and 10:30am)
This is the day Christians celebrate and proclaim the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ. There will be music, preaching, smells and bells. Service times are 8:00am and 10:30am Easter Morning

Dear Good Shepherd,

We made it to the last Sunday of Lent! I hope you are all deeply leaning on Christ as he reveals your weaknesses to keeping your Lenten discipline. I know that has been my experience…Thanks be to God that he has come to save us from our sins and weaknesses! The spirit of thanksgiving for God’s salvation can also extend to other areas of your life where he has sustained you, delivered you, and carried you. Here in Esther the Jews celebrate corporately in remembrance of such an event in their history.

“20 And Mordecai recorded these things and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far, 21 obliging them to keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar and also the fifteenth day of the same, year by year, 22 as the days on which the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending gifts of food to one another and gifts to the poor.” Esther 9:20-22

This year I chose to try to keep from complaining and to try to see something positive instead. This passage made me think, if I am struggling to see something positive about a situation, I can always remind myself to think back to all the times God has brought me out of difficult situations. Giving glory and praise to God for his faithfulness is certainly better than complaining…

In Christ,
Andrea

Easter Prayer Vigil:The Easter Prayer Vigil this year will be Thursday March 28 to Saturday, March 30. In keeping with our study of the Gospel of Mark, this year we plan to be in prayer on the theme: Conforming our lives to Christ of the Bible. All are invited to sign up for either day or night hours. As always, we will be praying for our church, families, friends, community, nation and missions in the world. Please join us. This Week in Christian Ed: This Sunday we’ll continue our discussion of the Doctrine of Revelation. Last week we finished up our discussion of the canon of scripture and why the books in our bible were included. This week we’ll talk about the nature of scripture and how you might go about demonstrating that scripture is the word of God. This is an important step in learning how to defend and articulate your faith since so much of Christianity is grounded in biblical revelation.

Discussion Questions:
Text: Mark 8:27 – 30

1. [App] Even when studying God or the Bible, why does it take people a while to understand that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, and the Son of God?
2. [v.27-28] Rulers, Jews, foreigners, scribes, and Pharisees all have made their decision about who they believe Jesus to be. What do each of these people say about who Jesus really is?
3. [v.28] No matter what experience people share with him, all people, past and present, underestimate who Jesus really is and his mission to die for our salvation. Why do people (including us) tend to undermine or belittle Jesus’ character?
4. [v.29] Why does Jesus ask the disciples who he is? Regardless of their response, does the disciples’ answer mean anything to Jesus? Defend your reasoning.
5. [v.29] How is Peter’s confession a turning point for the disciples (and the Book of Mark as a whole)?
6. [v.30] For what reason does Jesus warn the disciples not to tell anyone about him being the Christ?
7. [App] Jesus is the reigning King, and we should subject our thoughts, actions, finances, relationships, etc, to him. As individuals or as a church, what do we need to bring subject to him the most?

Dear Good Shepherd,

I pray you are all having a great Lenten week! Here is a bit of encouragement I happened upon:

“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.” - 1 Peter 2:21-25

This Week in Christian Ed: This Sunday we’ll continue our discussion of the Doctrine of Revelation. Last week we discussed the Apocrypha and why Anglicans do not consider it part of the canon of scripture. This week we’ll discuss the development of the New Testament. How do we know that the books included in the New Testament belong there? How do we know that books that do belong there haven’t been excluded?

You can listen to last week’s class here.

Remember, if you have any questions you’ve been sitting on or would like me to address, please let me know by email before Sunday (lambeth98@gmail.com) or ask them during the class itself.

Trusting Jesus to Build His Church

I was in 2 Corinthians 4 this morning and this passage struck me:

“We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

So many things here:

1. Non-believers will not be impressed or persuaded into the kingdom of God. Dancing bears, drama, light shows, ripped jeans…none of it will matter because “the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers.”

2. The only power at the church’s disposal is: “the open statement of the truth”...by “open” here Paul means: clear, full, undiminished. Pulling no punches, not setting forth the benefits and hiding the cost, not selling Jesus like a commodity, but proclaiming the fullness of the gospel.

3. One cannot simply choose to become a Christian anymore than a blind man can choose to see. Spiritual blindness is a willed condition. In our fallenness we would rather remain in the dark. We like it there. Only God who said, “let light shine out of the darkness” can give us new eyes and new hearts. Only he turns sinners toward his Son. He does it (normatively) through the proclamation of his Word through his church.

I’m so tempted to find ways to make gospel more appealing to non-believers…to dress it up and take away its offense. Partly this is because I want a larger congregation. I don’t want to say anything that might cut against prevailing sensibilities and I want to say things that make people think well of me. Partly it’s because I don’t trust God when he says that his word is fully sufficient for opening blind eyes and for training those who see. Partly it is because I do not trust Jesus when he promises to build his church in his way.

Matt

Dear Good Shepherd,

Things went well last week; after sorting through a huge pile of mail, catching up on bills, I finally managed to get the bulletin together. Evelyn was a very good baby last week, and I nearly managed to get everything done. Let’s hope she continues those nice long naps!

“For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” - 1 Peter 2:21-25

It gives new meaning to these words having a newborn. Not only does God’s Word sustain us, but we also are hungry for it every few hours. Like nursing an infant, God’s word is also powerful; it can make even the worst situations better. If I am not getting enough to fill me, am I determined to scream until I do?
This Week in Christian Ed: This Sunday we’ll continue our discussion of the Doctrine of Revelation. How do we know who God is and what he is like? The answer to both questions centers on God’s own self-disclosure to his creatures both in the things he has made and in the words he has spoken. Last week we began to focus on his word, spoken. This week we’ll talk about the bible in particular - what it is, how it came to be, what books belong and why some books were not included.

Sproul, Cal Thomas, and Ravi Zacharias considered the theme No Compromise: Standing for the Truth of God’s Word at our 2013 National Conference. Together they examined what the Bible says about standing firm for bedrock truths such as the resurrection of Christ, the trustworthiness of Scripture, God’s plan for the family, our need to show mercy, the importance of theology, the primacy of preaching, the exclusivity of Jesus and much more.”

Guest Preacher, David Ould: This Sunday my friend and colleague the Rev. Discussion Questions:
Text: Mark 8:14-21 and Matthew 7:15-20

1. [App] What does it mean for Christians to turn their back and reject general public expectation or opinion? (For example the conflicts we will be having with gender orientation over the next decade.) How can this rejection be terrifying but also freeing?
2. [Mark 8:14] The disciples fail to serve Jesus properly and we do to. The fact that Jesus works with his disciples should be encouraging to us. Why?
3. [Mark 8] Jesus also continually shows his disciples grace and patience in their ignorance. Where can we as individuals or as a church extend this same type of grace to people we interact with regularly?
4. [App] Why does Jesus even all us to serve in the first place, when He could do it better?
5. [Mark 8:15] What does the “yeast” represent in Jesus’ analogy? Also, who are the Pharisees/Herodians of our day? Is there even a modern day equivalent?
6. [Mark 8:15] Jesus warns the disciples to be aware of the (false) teachings of the Pharisees/Herodians. What teachings of the world should we be aware of so that we can protect our faith?
7. [Mark 8:16-21] Jesus reminds the disciples of previous shortcomings of their faith, and how he is adequate to overcome it. How does Jesus do this for us in our times of desperation/panic? Do we understand the magnitude of this grace?

Dear Good Shepherd,

Well, it’s been my first week back here at the office. My working capacity will be somewhat compromised for a while as I pick up where I left off, get back into the swing of it all while tending to Evelyn, but I am excited to be back. I pray for you all as you journey through lent, that you be encouraged by God’s Word. As I was reading last week I came across this verse,

“Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.” – 1 Peter 2:2-3

It gives new meaning to these words having a newborn. Not only does God’s Word sustain us, but we also are hungry for it every few hours. Like nursing an infant, God’s word is also powerful; it can make even the worst situations better. If I am not getting enough to fill me, am I determined to scream until I do?

In Christ,
Andrea

Text:Mark 8:11-13 and Luke 18:10-14 (Optional: Deuteronomy 13:1-5)

1. [Luke 18] Why is it wrong to compare our faith to others? Furthermore, why is it worthless to compare ourselves to others in general?
2. [Luke 18] Compare the two prayers given in the parable. What stands out as important to you? Discuss what makes the two prayers different as well as any other subtle details worth mentioning.
3. [App] If only our faith is necessary for salvation, why bother to do works at all? Are acts of mercy toward others or our devotion to God worth anything?
4. [App] Is your/our faith only a personal matter? Does it have any impact on a community as a whole? Should it be discussed with friends, acquaintances, co-workers, strangers, etc.?
5. [Mark 8] Why are the Pharisees seeking a heavenly sign from Jesus? Haven’t Jesus shown enough miracles to prove His words true? Bonus Question: What miracles have the disciples seen but the Pharisees haven’t?
6. [App] Is it possible to tell the difference between those who are honestly seeking Christ and those who are only hassling or debating us but have made a decision against Christ? How do we treat either type of person? Do we treat them the same?

On Contradictions in Scripture: Every “contradiction” in the bible turns out upon close study to be the result of lazy logic or sloppy interpretation…here’s RC Sproul on the question:

Does God Care About Good Works? Someone asked me that question recently after I’d taught that works cannot justify. Here’s a brief, but hopefully helpful, answer:

Apart from Christ our “good works” are filthy rags in God’s sight (Isa 64:6) which is why they can play no role at all in our justification. They earn only condemnation. This is because every thought, word and deed before God turns our hearts from stone to flesh, flows out of a rebellious heart. The tower of Babel was, by appearance, a brilliantly engineered monument to human ability but it was built on pride, vanity, and rebellion. It was a filthy rag. Bad trees cannot produce good fruit. So our only hope is not to do better or be better people but to turn to and rely upon Christ alone who has done all the necessary good work on our behalf.

In Christ our works do not suddenly become pure…but because he has adopted us and made us his children God graciously accepts them, delights in them, and is pleased by them not because they themselves are good or helpful or needed…but because they flow out of the new hearts he has created in us. He receives them in the same way you might receive a mud-pie from your three year old daughter - endearing and delightful and pleasing but not something you’d serve for desert.

That easy peaceful feeling: Never merely assume that a feeling of peace about a decision is from God. You can just as easily resolve the tension between your new nature and your old nature by giving in to the old and finding a false kind of peace there. Test everything by scripture…not emotion or intuition. I’ve linked this book by Kevin DeYoung many times but I’m linking it again because some have asked about how to go about making important decisions. Knowing God’s commands, character and purposes and making decisions based on that knowledge is the wisest way to choose your course. God reveals his commands, character and purposes in scripture. The more scriptural knowledge you possess, then, the wiser your choices will be…although you will likely find that many biblical choices do not result in peaceful feelings.

Good Lenten Reading: The late John Stott (an Anglican by the way) wrote perhaps the classic work on the meaning of the Cross of Christ. It impacted my life and early ministry in dramatic ways. It’s certainly a challenging read but it’s a book every Christian should read.

Justification and Works: During Christian education last Sunday we discussed the relationship between works and faith in Justification…and in particular the seeming contradiction (though, of course, it is only “seeming”) between Paul’s letters and James chapter 2 on the question. I’ve written an article about that question here. Here’s an excerpt:

...when James writes that “faith alone” does not justify and that faith must be joined to works, he does not mean that the “pistis” of which Paul writes does not justify. He means the “pistis” of demons cannot justify. Merely agreeing with the proposition that Jesus lived, died, rose again, and ascended into heaven, is insufficient. Such “belief” cannot justify because, as the absence of good works makes manifest, there is no substance to it.

Abraham’s faith, James observes, involved more than cognitive assent. His trust in God’s promise was such that he was willing to sacrifice his own son. He lived out what he professed with his mouth revealing that his was not a dead faith but a living one. He jumped into the pool.

And that is precisely the kind of “pistis” that justifies—a faith that includes as its necessary consequence a transformed life. What appears at first to be a contradiction between two apostolic teachers, is truly a profound agreement.

And it’s an important one…read more

Sunday’s Sermon: For those of you who missed it, here’s the video of last Sunday’s sermon: “Jesus Feeds the Gentiles” from Mark 8:1-10.
Guest Preacher: on Sunday March 3rd, the Rev. David Ould, an Englishman currently serving in Sydney Australia and a good friend of mine and fellow writer for the Anglican website Stand Firm, will take the pulpit at Good Shepherd. He’s a fantastic preacher and expositor of scripture. He and his family (wife and three kids) are vacationing in the United States and decided, naturally, to swing through Binghamton…the vacation hotspot of the Northeast, like Tahiti with no beach (at least that’s what I told him)...and stay at the rectory for a few days. Please make plans to be here on March third and welcome David and his family warmly. He was recently a guest on Christian apologist James White’s radio show. You can listen to the episode here.

Pope Benedict: has recently announced his retirement. This has evoked a number of cries and calls from the secular media for the Roman Catholic Church to “get with the times” and liberalize her various doctrines and policies. While Anglicans certainly disagree with the Roman Catholic Church on a number of crucial doctrinal matters and we hope they will one day receive the doctrines of Justification by Faith Alone and Scripture as the supreme and only inerrant measure for Church teaching, we also pray that the Roman Church will resist the pressure to change her doctrine for the purpose of pleasing the world. Trevin Wax, a Reformed Baptist pastor, recently wrote an insightful article about the calls for change and the culture from which they arise…here’s an excerpt:

Peppered throughout the news coverage of Pope Benedict’s resignation announcement are comments like these from “practicing Catholics” who are politicians or common Catholics interviewed on the street.

The subtext behind these statements is this: The Church needs to get with the program.

Now, as a Baptist, I have more than a few disagreements with the teaching of the Church of Rome - sola scriptura being the watershed issue from which flows a whole host of other doctrines and practices. Despite overtures from Pope Benedict on the doctrine of justification, Trent still stands (unfortunately).

But let’s go back to this notion of the Church “getting with the program.” First off, the idea that the global Church should cater to the whims of a shrinking number of North American Catholics betrays a stunning ethnocentrism and an imperialistic mindset among elites who, ironically, would consider themselves “multi-cultural.”

Beyond that, however, I find it interesting that evangelicals are facing the same kind of cultural pressures.

If a pastor won’t get with the program and recant his previous opposition to homosexuality, then he’s off the inaugural platform.

After all, we’re in the 21st century now! What’s this continued opposition to abortifacient drugs? What’s this old-fashioned idea that kids need a mom and a dad, not two of the same gender? For heaven’s sake, get your head out the clouds and put your feet on the ground!...read more
